    Feral hogs in Georgia cause an estimated $150 million in agricultural damage each year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To address this growing threat, Ƶ State University researchers are launching an AI-powered drone system to autonomously protect peanut fields from nighttime wildlife intrusion and reduce costly crop losses. Supported by a $25,000 Georgia Peanut Commission grant, the one-year Night Owl project is a collaboration between Ƶ State assistant professors Taeyeong Choi and Yan Fang, and University of Georgia agricultural economist Ford Ramsey.

    Seeking refuge in Savannah, Georgia, Caelyn Summers sat anxiously in her childhood home last September while Hurricane Helene rumbled across the state before turning north toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of the deadliest storms in two decades, the Category 4 hurricane killed more than 200 people and left Summers without power for nearly four days. Among the images that stood out the most were those of Asheville, North Carolina, where she spent many family vacations over the years. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she leapt at the opportunity to be one of about two dozen Ƶ students to make the four-hour drive to Asheville in January to survey Helene damage and meet with community members to discuss recovery efforts.
